Cruise packing list: what to pack for embarkation, sea days and port days

Organize a cruise suitcase, embarkation carry-on and port-day bag with a practical checklist for first-time and repeat cruisers.

7 minute read

Pack the embarkation bag first

Checked luggage may not reach your cabin immediately, so treat the embarkation bag as a one-day travel kit. Keep identification, cruise documents, medication, valuables and anything needed before dinner with you. Add a swimsuit or change of clothes if you plan to use the pool before your cabin is ready.

  • Passport or approved identification and cruise documents
  • Daily medication and essential medical items
  • Phone, charger and a small power bank
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle if permitted
  • A change of clothes and basic toiletries

Plan outfits by activity, not by day

Instead of packing a completely different outfit for every day, build a small group of pieces that work across sea days, casual meals and excursions. Then add the specific items required for formal nights, specialty dining or active port plans.

Check the cruise line's current dress guidance and prohibited-items list before packing. Policies can differ by line, ship and itinerary, so the official cruise line is always the final source.

Create a separate port-day list

A port bag should be light enough to carry for hours. Start with identification, excursion details, payment method and the ship's return time. Add sun or rain protection, any required medication and only the gear needed for that day's activity.

  • Ship card, identification and excursion confirmation
  • Local currency or an accepted payment card
  • Portable charger and offline directions
  • Sun protection, weather layer and comfortable shoes
  • Emergency contact and ship return information

Use the final-night rule

If your cruise line collects checked bags on the final night, keep the next morning's clothing, toiletries, medication, documents and travel-day essentials out of the suitcase. A short final-night checklist prevents the classic mistake of packing the shoes or clothes needed to leave the ship.

Review baggage limits and prohibited items directly with your cruise line before departure. A printable list helps organize the plan, but official policies may change.
